The Metaverse: What it is and Why You Should Be Excited About it

You’ve probably heard it on the corridors or in the news: the metaverse. But what exactly is the metaverse? Many people immediately think of the company Facebook with the metaverse, but it is a bit more complex than that.

The Metaverse: What it is and Why You Should Be Excited About it
The Metaverse

The “metaverse” is the general term for an online network where people can connect with each other through 3D virtual spaces in an interactive way. Users will participate wearing virtual reality (VR) glasses and will be given an avatar that they can use to look and walk around. As a company, Facebook would like to participate in the metaverse, but this does not mean that the metaverse is also from Facebook.

How Does The Metaverse Differ From Today’s Internet?

Let’s go back in time to the first websites. This was the web 1.0 which saw the arrival of html websites, where you could place text and images on websites and link to other websites. At the moment we live in the era of web 2.0, in which much more interaction is possible between users of the internet. Think of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Users can share their content on these platforms, however it is always managed by a large company. This entails many privacy problems: user data can be sold for the use of advertisements. This is the main reason Facebook and Google have become so big and powerful and many people find this a problem.

The metaverse will become the new generation of online internet browsing: web 3.0. The great thing about the metaverse is that you can own bits of the internet yourself. Think of things like land, currency, avatars, art and music. Owning the piece of the internet has been made possible by the advent of blockchain and more specifically: Non-Fungible-Token (NFT) technology. This technology makes it possible to track ownership of digital creations. For example, someone can put a song on the metaverse and encode it so that if other users buy the song, the owner of the song (the artist) gets the money. Not a company like Spotify or a record label is in between, it goes directly to the artist of the song! If this song is then sold on to someone else, it may be determined that another X percentage will go to the artist. For this reason, music, film makers and other content creators will tend to create everything in the metaverse, which makes it likely that its use will grow rapidly.

Search Engines And The Metaverse

But how does the metaverse change the way information is searched on the internet ? If you use VR glasses, it is difficult to enter search terms. This probably means that search results will be visible with the help of voice . If you do this with VR glasses, it should be clear from the voice message whether the user wants to see navigation, text or video results. With the help of eye tracking, scrolling could be made possible with VR glasses.

It is also likely that, as with web 2.0, users can choose which search engines to choose. Since there is still a lot of information available on the web 2.0, this information will probably be used by search engines in the metaverse. In the long term, there will likely be a transition where more and more content and information will be created on the metaverse.
